大学院生のための専門英語科目A course for graduate students
科学論文の英語を分析し、テクノロジーを味方につけ、最後は自分の研究や研究室を英語のライトニングトークで語る。薬学研究科の大学院生のための、少人数・実践型の英語科目です。 Analyze the linguistic characteristics of scientific papers, harness technology, and finish with a lightning talk on your own research or lab, in English. A small, hands-on English course for graduate students in pharmaceutical sciences.
授業の特色（2025年度の例）Highlights (AY 2025 example)
教材は、受講生それぞれが読み慣れた自分の分野の論文。
毎週、自分の研究に引き寄せて分析し、発表し合います。The teaching materials are the papers you already read in your own field. You analyze them from the standpoint of your own research and share what you found.
IMRaD等、論文の構成、各セクションでの展開や英語表現などを、いつも読んでいるジャーナルの論文で確かめます。分野ごとの「お作法」の違いも見えてきます。You examine paper structure such as IMRaD, how each section unfolds, and the English expressions used, all in the journals you actually read. You will also come to see how conventions differ across fields.
AI翻訳や生成AIなどのテクノロジーを禁止するのではなく、「丸投げでは成し得ない、自分の英語」を獲得するために使えるようになることを目指します。様々なツールを、コースを終えた後も自分で使い続けられる力を身につけます。Rather than banning technologies such as AI translation and generative AI, the aim is to learn to use them in order to acquire your own English, something no machine could produce on its own, and to build the ability to keep using a range of tools on your own after the course.
表現をそのまま覚えるのではなく、自分の分野の論文を分析し、断定を避ける表現や主張を強める表現などがどこでどう使われているかを自分で見つけます。見つけたことを報告し合うことで、分析力・理解力・表現力を身につけます。Rather than memorizing expressions as they are, you analyze papers in your own field and discover for yourself where and how writers soften or strengthen their claims. By sharing what you find, you build the ability to analyze, understand and express.
最も多くの人の目に触れるアブストラクトの構成とジャーナルの規定を学んだうえで、グラフィカル・アブストラクトやビデオ・アブストラクトなど、新しい時代の発信のかたちを探ります。After learning how abstracts, the most-read part of any paper, are built and what journals require, you explore newer ways of sharing research: graphical abstracts and video abstracts.
最終成果物は、自分の研究テーマや研究室を他分野の人にも伝わるように紹介する、数分の英語のライトニングトーク。未発表の内容を扱う場合は研究分野の概要や、その他、自分自身が興味を持つテーマの紹介という形もとれます。動画として制作・公開したい場合は、指導教員の許可が必要です。The final product is a short lightning talk in English introducing your research topic or your lab to people outside your field. If your work is unpublished, you can instead give an overview of your field or present another topic you are interested in. If you wish to produce and publish your talk as a video, you need your lab supervisor’s permission.

科学論文の基本構造と言語的特徴がわかる。Understand the basic structure and linguistic features of scientific papers.
専門領域の知見や研究成果を英語で発信できる。Communicate the knowledge and research outcomes of your field in English.
英語による発信力を自ら向上させるための手法を身につける。Acquire methods to keep improving your English communication skills on your own.

秋学期・週1回。2025年度の進め方をもとにしています（年度により順番や内容は変わります）。Fall semester, once a week. Based on the AY 2025 schedule (the order and content vary from year to year).
大学院生にとっての専門英語とは何か。研究者はどんな場面で、誰に向けて、英語で発信しているのか。自分の研究とテクノロジーとの関わりも含めて考え、コース全体の見取り図をつかみます。What does “Advanced English” mean for a graduate student? Where, and to whom, do researchers communicate in English? You explore these questions, including how technology fits in, and get the big picture of the course.
IMRaD の各パートの役割、Introduction の CARS モデル、Discussion の組み立て、ヘッジとブースター、そしてアブストラクトの構成とジャーナルの規定。自分の分野の論文を分析し、意見交換をします。The role of each IMRaD section, the CARS model for Introductions, how a Discussion is built, hedges and boosters, and the structure of abstracts and journal guidelines. You analyze papers in your own field and exchange views.
自分の分野のジャーナルからグラフィカル・アブストラクトやビデオ・アブストラクトを探し、文字のアブストラクトと何が同じで何が違うか、「グラフィックや動画だからこそ見せられるもの」は何かを考えます。効果的な伝え方も学びます。You search your field’s journals for graphical and video abstracts, compare them with the written abstract, and ask what only graphics or video can show. You also learn what makes such communication effective.
他分野の学生・研究者・社会人に自分の研究の意義が伝わるよう、話す内容を練り、フィードバックを交わして原稿を仕上げ、練習します。図の作成や発音の確認など、役立つツールも紹介。希望者は動画としても制作します。自分が大学院時代に何をしていたのかを、英語で伝えられることを目指します。You draft what you will say so that students, researchers and professionals outside your field can grasp why your research matters, exchange feedback, finalize the script and rehearse. Useful tools for figures and pronunciation are introduced. Those who wish can also produce their talk as a video. The aim is to be able to explain, in English, what you did in graduate school.
全員のライトニングトークを聞いてフィードバックを交わし、到達目標に照らして学びを振り返ります。Everyone gives their lightning talk and exchanges feedback, then reflects on the semester against the course goals.
